EZ ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

EZ Electric Power Steering uses EPS (Electronic Power Steering) systems as fitted in modern cars for all conversions.

The units are mainly produced by Koyo and NSK, both made in Japan. 

The advantage of using these units is that there are numerous safety features already built in, which makes it easier to obtain a TÜV approval.

 

In the unlikely event of the unit failing to operate or a power failure, the steering will be exactly the same as prior to the conversion. 

Additionally the drop in assistance will be very gradual, usually after 1 or 2 seconds, avoiding a "jerk" in the steering wheel should this occur in a fast turn. 

If the electromotor should ever jam, there is a clutch unit which disabling it from the steering column, insuring that the steering will always function freely.

 

 

 

                

 

EZ Electric Power Steering develops a bespoke metal mounting frame for each type of car we convert. The prototype is bent by hand, drilled and welded (just the frame, not the car!) until everything fits perfectly, after which the final design is made on the computer as a CAD drawing, laser cut and then bent at the correct angles.

The definitive design then has various adjusting possibilities to compensate for the large size variances that many classic cars have.

The input and output shafts have the original male splines at the outer ends allowing the original steering wheel and steering box or rack and pinion to be used. The other side of the shafts have female splines which connect to the power steering unit. This guarantees a reliable connection under all conditions.

The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and the torsion sensor, that determine the amount of assistance, are reset by us to perfectly suit the steering character of the car they are developed for. 

The modern ECU's work with CAN bus (Controller Area Network) data signals which are not present in a classic car.

 

To solve this, EZ Electric Power Steering has developed an interface that simulates the signals for engine speed, road speed and steering angle of the CAN bus and regulates the ECU. 

The speed signal kan be realised artificially through GPS or through a speed sensor installed between the speedo cable and the speedometer.
